Paul Coupille

He imagined that he would finish his old age, quiet, far from Charleval. But destiny sometimes plays tricks on you. Paul Coupille, a child of the village, had to hide, but Daniel Rocher finally found him and upset all his plans by taking him on board the Château Charleval adventure. And now, at 93 years old, the artist has rediscovered the creative energy of his early years.

The man with a thousand lives – he was in turn a decorator for theaters, stage manager for the mime Marceau, head stagehand at the Comédie des Champs-Elysées, chauffeur for the poet Supervielle… – never ceases to enrich an already abundant body of work. The artist has thus drawn on old drawings made on planes during his trips to the United States to produce a new series entitled “Transatlantique“. These abstract canvases in black and white join his old collections as well as the Zugrus, these whimsical characters who populate the park of the castle, where, as a child, Paul Coupille used to play gendarme and thief for entire afternoons with a friend.

Château Charleval accueille l’exposition « Seasons of heaven », qui réunit les deux artistes, Aurélia Rocher et Joanna Cutri. Céramiques et toiles contemporaines se répondent et questionnent notre lien à la Mémoire et la Nature.
